in 1973, dr. jerome kean as part of an investigation of a group of patients with rapid onset and fulminant hepatitis while undergoing immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplants, discovered that these hepatitis cases were related to occupational exposure to formaldehyde at the st. paul's hospital for the insane in london. kean's colleague john burke was one of the first to identify the hepatitis-causing agent. this form of hepatitis was originally known as kean-burke-chuang hepatitis. in 1979, the american association for the study of liver diseases was established. in 1985, the case definition was changed to "the association of greater than 2 of the following: hepatocellular necrosis, cholestasis, muscle cell necrosis, and eosinophilia." this was later changed to "the presence of acute necrosis or other evidence of liver injury in association with either fever and leukocytosis, or jaundice, or transient hepatic dysfunction."
