The golden lancehead snake is one of the most venomous snakes in South America. The mortality rate for people that get antivenom is believed to be up to 3%. That number greatly increases if you do not get any treatment, up to a 7% mortality rate. Even if the individual does not die, they will suffer severe damage to their body.

With so few people stepping foot on the island, and its reputation for being home to deadly snakes, you would think the golden lanceheads rule Snake Island like reptilian kings. But in fact, the future survival of this rare type of snake is very uncertain.
The number of golden lanceheads on Snake Island is estimated to be between just 2,400 and 2,900 snakes. Given that this is the only place on Earth where these snakes live, they are a critically endangered species of snake.
To make matters worse, the mainland deforestation efforts not only destroyed a lot of snakes and their habitat but have also resulted in fewer birds migrating to the island. There is even more competition and less food to go around for the snakes. The population could potentially drop as a result.
Another critical threat to the golden lancehead is poaching. Scientific research and the black market pet trade have made these snakes incredibly valuable. As a result, criminals have tried to capture and smuggle the rare snakes for a potential payout of $10,000-30,000 per specimen.
Instead, there is probably one snake for every 140 square meters. When you consider the small amount of space on the island where the snakes thrive the most, away from the rocky outcroppings, there are still far too many snakes for a person to want to spend time on the land.

Burmese pythons, as the name suggests, are native to Southeast Asia, not Florida. They are relatively docile toward humans and so have become a popular species as a pet. They have become an invasive species multiplying rapidly in Florida since Hurricane Andrew demolished an exotic snake breeding facility in 1992, allowing pythons to escape into the Everglades. These numbers have been bolstered by pet owners releasing overgrown or unwanted snakes into the wild. As a result, pythons are fast becoming the apex predators of the Everglades, with numbers in the hundreds of thousands.

New York officials said last week that they recently made a surprising discovery on New York's Long Island. On Valentine's Day, the Department of Environmental Conservation received a report of a massive snake along the side of a road.
The snake was on the side of a road in Medford, a town just a short drive west of the Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. The agency said that the snake has since been removed from the road to be "appropriately" disposed of.
The animal was identified as a reticulated python, which according to London's Natural History Museum is the "longest snake in the world." Animals of this species are native to Southern Asia, the history museum said, and can grow to be more than 20 feet long. In the wild, the snakes are known to eat birds and mammals, "including large species such as deer or boar," according to Zoo Atlanta.
"It is illegal to keep these types of snakes as pets in New York and they may only be possessed by holders of a Dangerous Animal License," the New York Department of Environmental Conservation said. "An investigation into the owner of the snake is ongoing."
Put a bunch of pretty people on an island, dress them in swimwear for large portions and then have a giant snake occasionally.....EVENTUALLY......pick them off. Unfortunately the people eating takes way too long to start. Alone on a spoil island deep in the Florida Everglades Kimmel had come looking for the invasive python. He knew the mounds of high, dry ground would be fertile hunting with late May rains causing waters to rise. He estimated the coil of muscle in the crunchy underbrush at about 17 feet.
The snake may be the one inspectors were searching for following a June 27 Facebook post that included a photo of one in the area. After conducting nightly searches and deploying traps, inspectors were unable to find the snake. But the one captured looks similar to the one posted on Facebook.
In October, a woman brought in a 3-foot-long ball python after running over it in her car near the same area. In June 2018, county workers found a 4.5-foot-long ball python at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill.

All area rules must be followed. No permit or hunting license is required. There is no bag limit.
In Hawaii, it is illegal to own a pet snake or bring a snake to the islands. There are no snakes in Hawaii, except for the brahminy blind snake, a small non-venomous snake from Asia and Africa that resembles an earthworm.
City Environmental Specialist Nancy Richie said Gary Grisko, owner of Sand Castle Landscaping, immediately called her, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Marco Island Police Department as his two employees stood guard over the snake.
Everglades National Park biologist Skip Snow, on the front lines of the park's battle against the advancing constrictors, said the discovery on Marco is another example that water is not a hindrance to the pythons' spread.
